Richmond: Invento-geeks gots money, too

April 2nd, 2009 by Mark B · 1 Comment

ABC News has a video of last nite’s Maker story here in ipod format (that’s m4v /QT – am looking for others). Not a bad job, but the expected editorial difficulty with a nuanced topic was clear. (We’ll post some depth on it soon.) The reporter needed context so he pitched the Maker movement as one of frugality-driven necessity. But interviewees, Mr. Jalopy and Mark Frauenfelder (also of Boingboing.net) did manage to get the power and pleasureof resourcefulness/bricolage into the mix. Better news: Relevant to the previous post on bringing maker to Richmond was mention of the San Mateo Event (and perhaps Austin added in) which, the voice over noted, drew “65,000 invento-geeks and fans last year.” Yes, Virginia, you need this and are this in more ways than one.

Haven’t yet heard back from the Make overlords, but let’s cross our fingers for a Maker Faire Richmond 2010, eh?
